Teens in trouble at school

Teenagers don't always do the right thing. If your son or daughter is facing a school stand-down or suspension (see below for details), it's important you know what's happening.

• For a stand-down, you can ask to meet the Principal, or they may ask to meet you. Your teenager can attend, as can a support person if you want one.
• For a suspension, the school Board of Trustees needs to ask you to meet with them. Be sure to do this, ideally accompanied by a support person. The Board should send you details of the meeting and suspension. At least 48 hours before the meeting, you should also be sent the Principal's report. Helpful tips

• Plan what you will want to say in the meeting.
• Take a support person who knows your teenager well and can speak up for them. It could be a sports coach, family friend, teacher aide or guidance counsellor.
  
• If you think the right process has not been followed, contact your local Ministry of Education office.
