Sexuality

Many of us find sex and sexuality hard to talk about. But starting the discussion  in a matter-of-fact way from an early age builds a strong platform for those tricky questions and conversations as they get older.

Talking with children in an honest way helps them understand the emotional and physical changes of growing up. Showing healthy attitudes and values yourself, and giving your children respect, will encourage them to grow into teenagers who do the same.

Helpful tips

  • Start early by answering your child's questions clearly and calmly, at a level they will understand.
  • Talk about feelings and relationships not just the biology.
  • Use everyday situations such as television advertisements to start talking.
  • Talk about the importance of positive relationships.
  • When relationships or bodies are discussed at school, start a conversation by asking about the lessons.
  • Chat with other parents about how they answer difficult questions or tackle tricky issues
