Safety matters
All children need to explore and learn - but they also need to be kept safe. Accidents cause many deaths and injuries. Over 8,500 New Zealand children need to go to hospital each year, as a result of accidents.
Many injuries such as burns, falls and choking, happen at home. Many are avoidable. By thinking about the risks, and taking simple safety measures — you can significantly lower the risks of children accidentally getting hurt.
Helpful tips
- Always remember that each year brings different safety challenges, as your child's world grows and different things are tested and learned
- Talk together about the risks and how to avoid them
- Establish firm household rules, such as children never lighting matches, never running or playing in the kitchen, and standing still when you're driving out of the garage
- Have a clear household plan for earthquakes and fires
- Encourage your children to learn swimming skills
- Talk with other parents and find out what your children and friends are up to
- Think of ways to limit risks, such as knowing where older children will be and the best way they could get home
- Take real care in high risk areas such as swimming or in a boat — and stay alert on holiday.
