Road safety
Encouraging children to walk or cycle is great. But take care. Children are less aware of danger. They don't see as well as adults when looking sideways. They can't always tell where traffic sounds are coming from. Being shorter, they can't see so clearly what's ahead.
Helpful tips
- In the car, always use a child car seat or restraint
- Set a good example by buckling up yourself
- Teach your children how to safely cross roads — stop, look, listen
- For cycling, give them a bike helmet and high-viz jacket and make sure they use them
- Until they have good cycling skills, keep them off the roads
- Safety gear and skills are also important for scooters and skateboards.
