Learning my son is gay, or my daughter lesbian

Maybe your son or daughter telling you they're gay or lesbian is no surprise – on the other hand it could be totally unexpected.

Whatever the case, remember that they are the same as always. They may have shared a new part of who they are, but the only thing that has changed is your knowledge of them. If you're feeling confused, it may help to know that sexuality is not influenced by parenting.

Above all, they continue to deserve your love, respect and support. Young gays and lesbians often have a difficult time facing their sexuality. Your son or daughter may have struggled with this for a long time. Listen to them. Stand by them. Be every bit as proud as you were.
