How should I tackle the subject with them?

Do all you can to communicate openly and listen well. Be approachable not judgemental. Give choices not orders. Make your opinion clear, but do so in a reasoned way. Tackling the issue with phrases such as "I think that...." rather than "don't do that...." could get a more positive response.

Make sure you know what you are talking about. There's excellent information on why teenagers take drugs available at the Team-Up website.

Keys to tackling the issue of possible drug use:

  • Choose a good time.
  • Being angry, judging and criticising only makes things worse.
  • Be willing to talk honestly about the drugs you use such as alcohol or medicines.
  • Don't over-react to situations or jump to conclusions without the facts.
  • Don't be afraid to ask for help. Organisations offering support include The Alcohol Drug Helpline 0800 787 797 (10am to 10pm).
