Disability support services
One in five New Zealanders has a mental, physical or intellectual impairment.
Finding out your child is disabled may well leave you feeling unsure about what to do next. It is crucial to get good support and information as soon as possible, so you and your whānau don't feel isolated and unable to cope. Early support will help your child to make the best possible start in life.
If you're a parent with a disability the basic support you need may well be the same or similar as for any other parent. However, any additional services and support you need should be flexible, fit in with your family life and easy to access.
Several agencies are available to support parents and children with disabilities, and help you to ensure you understand your rights, or where to go for specific support. See links below.
Helpful tips
- Make sure people know how much, or little, support you and your family/whānau want
- Help those around you to understand more about the disability
- Ask support services and other parents to help you get in touch with others in the same situation.
