Child abuse

Child abuse can involve sexual, physical or emotional abuse. It can also involve neglect such as not caring for or feeding a baby properly or not providing proper supervision or medical care

Abused children are usually too scared to tell anyone. Too often, the people they should be able to turn to are in fact their abusers.

If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, it is very important to take action. Abuse or neglect needs to be reported so the family will get the help and support they need, and the child will be protected.

Helpful tips

  • Signs of abuse vary. A child may tell you it's happening, they may have bruising or cuts, or they may show behavioural changes such as becoming aggressive or withdrawn. You may become aware of violence within the family.
  • If you suspect abuse or neglect but aren't sure whether to report it, talk to someone. This person could be a nurse or social worker, someone from CYF, Jigsaw or Barnardos, or just someone you trust.
  • To report abuse, call Child, Youth and Family on 0508 FAMILY (0508 326 459) – or the Police. For support or advice, call the Jigsaw helpline 0800 228 737.
