What about sleeping together?
Some mums or parents like to sleep with their baby – there can be benefits, for example, breastfeeding may be easier in the early weeks. But there can be risks. If you smoke or take drugs, Plunket advises you do not share a bed with your baby.
- Don't sleep together on the couch. Your baby can become trapped between you and the cushions.
- Make sure your bed is firm. Don't use a soft underlay, such as lambs' wool. Use lightweight blankets, not heavy quilts. Keep bedding low on the bed, so they can't cover your baby's head.
- Don't put baby between you and your partner, as there's more chance they'll slip under the bedding.
- Make sure baby can't fall out of bed, but not against pillows or a wall, where they can become trapped. Consider putting the mattress on the floor to avoid risks.
